“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” 1 Peter 3:15

Today’s youth are confronted with many competing voices about who they are and where they belong in society, in the world, and in their relationship with God.

Turning The Tide Youth Ministries seeks to:
- Call you to be disciples of Jesus Christ
- Respond to the needs and interests of youth
- Be connected to the whole church, community, and the world
- To become world changers!

“The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible – and achieve it, generation after generation.” Pearl S. Buck

We believe the quote above completely and so we want our youth not just to change the world but to change the world for the better! Our goal is to help students achieve the impossible for God. By equipping, empowering, and inspiring them to a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

We also believe that after God, parents have the primary responsibility for the spiritual development of their youth. We believe our ministry is to “walk along side” parents, enabling and equipping them in this God-given role. So if you have any questions feel free to contact us anytime!

Thank You for supporting this very important ministry!

We are doing something completely new this year. For the entire months of September and October we will be diving into the movie of “To Save A Life”. Each night we meet for both Radiate and Ignite we will be watching a clip from the movie and then discussing how the youth can change the world one friend at a time. The movie is a very powerful and real movie about the real-life challenges of teens and their choices. (you can watch the trailer on our homepage)

Included with this sermon series is a daily devotional challenge. We will be challenging all the youth to get (we will provide the series takers with a free one) a Devo2Go CD and journal. Devo2Go comes with audio downloadable to an ipod or other mp3 player, and an interactive journal with web-links and questions that really make you think. With 36 audio sessions presented by seven “guides”, Devo2Go helps teens fall in love with the Bible and develop a daily quiet time.

Synopsis: Jake and Roger grew up as best friends. But in high school, Jake becomes a star athlete who has it all: popularity, a college scholarship, and the hottest girl on campus. It’s an ideal life that comes at the exclusion of his childhood friend. Meanwhile, Roger no longer fits in Jake’s circle of friends and becomes tired of being pushed aside. He makes a tragic move that spins Jake’s world out of control. As Jake searches for answers, one question plagues him the most: Could he have saved his friend? Jake is deeply compelled to reach out to students who are on the fringe of acceptability by the school’s upper crust. But he soon finds that reaching out to the undesirable might cost him everything—his reputation, friends, even his dreams. It’s a journey that will change Jake’s life forever.

Please note that we will be showing the “church friendly” version of this film on Sept. 8th. The original film (found when you buy/rent the DVD) has a few curse words and other strong elements to this. Since the movie deals with the realities of teen culture but without diluting the gospel message I recommend this movie to any youth 7th grade and older. If you want to know Turning The Tide Youth Ministries’ stance on PG-13 and R rated movies we fall closing in line with what this website says: Click Here

Top 10 Helpful Hints to Parents of Teenagers

Below is a list of the top 10 Helpful Hints to parents of Teenagers. Some are encouraging and some are challenging. This is a list from Eric Wakeling who is the youth pastor of Calvary Church in CA. He has been a youth pastor for 15 years. He has some great experience with working with parents of teenagers.
10. Listen to your kids. Seriously listen. Stop talking and listen. Try to not react or respond in big ways – even facial expressions. They need to know that they can keep telling you the important events of their life, both good and bad.

9. Love them to the point of embarrassment. They won’t like it in the moment. They will squirm and be embarrassed. They will love it deep down and they will remember it for a lifetime.

8. Take computers out of bedrooms and any other private place. Do it now. Stop reading this article and go take them out…seriously, now. It’s just not smart to put temptations right in your kid’s face. I would take out televisions too. And don’t think that if it’s not connected to the internet that it’s safe. Do you really want them up all night playing video games? Also, they are smarter than you, technologically speaking. It’s probably connected to the internet through your neighbor’s wi-fi or something like that. Go, now.

7. Take your kid’s adult sponsor to coffee and get to know them. This person is spending tons of time talking to your kid about spiritual things and giving their views and opinions on all sorts of things. Don’t you think you should know who that person is? Yeah, we screen people, but so should you.

6. Encourage our adult sponsors to do extra things with your kid and give them the resources to do so. Adult sponsors are normal people who are busy. They want to serve, but they are going to get busy and end up doing the minimum requirements of just Sunday mornings. A phone call, email, or letter from you will go a long way encouraging them to spend more time with your kid and help them know what your child needs. Give them gift cards to restaurants, bowling, Boomers, coffee, or things like that to help them go have fun and model the Christian life to your students. More is usually “caught” by kids than what is “taught.”

5. Don’t put sports first in your kid’s life. If you want your kids to not grow spiritually, then have them commit their entire lives to a sport that will take them out of church on Sundays and Wednesdays and show them that the priority for you is the sport and not their spiritual growth. They will probably never play the sport in an organized way after they are 18, but their spiritual growth could be stunted long-term. Seriously, what is more important?

4. Affirm your youth pastors. They don’t hear it very often. They hear complaints and opinions but not a ton of affirmation. Send them cards, emails, and nice phone calls. And wouldn’t you rather open a card with a nice gift card inside?

3. Encourage your kids to live in a dorm their freshman year of college, if possible. This one is a little bit more subjective and different for some than others. But I just think that they will grow in the ways they need to become a real adult in a college dorm that is somewhat contained and supervised, but it isn’t your house. It will be hard and this can be at a Christian college if you are concerned about the crazy college life, but they need to experience the autonomy. Also, if they go to a secular school, help them get connected with the Campus Crusade or Intervarsity leader at their college. This helped me a ton when I was at UCSB my freshman year.

2. Don’t defend your kids to teachers, small group leaders, and pastors. Just listen to them. They are trying to help your kid. They want to see them grow – not as much as you – but they do. It’s very confusing to have parents fight back and disagree when they point out something going on in their kid’s life, remember, everyone is on the same side and wants what’s best for your kid.

DRUM ROLL…………..

1. Make sure your kids see your spiritual life. Let them see you reading the Bible in the living room. Let them see you praying or carrying a list of prayer requests. Let them see you sign-up for retreats or Bible studies because you value that. Let them see you spend time in solitude with the Lord or fast or practice other spiritual disciplines. When they see you put God first, they will remember it when the time comes.

Webster’s dictionary defines a “cluster” as: “A group of the same or similar elements gathered closely together. To gather or grow in bunches.”

Clusters are our high school small group ministry that is designed to combine people of similar interests to learn, grow, and mature in their faith together. These groups will coincide with the Awana and Ignite ministries that meet on Tuesday or Wednesday nights from 6-8pm. However, what’s different about this ministry is instead of meeting at the church we will be meeting in pre-approved homes throughout the community.

Our youth ministry’s goal is to “guide our youth to ‘Grow Deeper’ in their relationship with God and to ‘Go Wider’ in their influence!” And this ministry’s purpose is to have youth grow deeper in their faith through discipleship and discovering God’s word together in a small group.
